That's how Ek met his would-be Spotify co-founder Martin Lorentzon, who at the time was running TradeDoubler. The product was a success, and in 2006 digital marketing company TradeDoubler acquired it. That was how the idea of creating a service that was “better than piracy” was born.Īt 23, Daniel, who had already worked with major IT companies, founded his first startup Advertigo, an online advertising company. Already in 2002, he realized that he could never legislate away from piracy. Subsequently, the Napster experience influenced the creation of Ek's main product. The main advantage and convenience of the platform was at the same time its main problem, which led to its closure – piracy. As a teenager, he actively listened to it through Napster, a music file sharing service where users could exchange music with each other and download songs. His grandparents, both former musicians, gave him a guitar at age 5 and literally instilled in him a love for music. Programming wasn't Daniel's only passion, however – music was another. They took lots of orders at low cost and made up to $50,000 a month.
